LAWRENCE (KSNT) – Democrats have endorsed a former University of Kansas men's basketball player to fill a vacant Kansas state House seat.
Matthew Kleinman announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, May 20th that he is running for the Democratic Party in Kansas' 2nd Congressional District. He currently operates an online campaign website, offering people the option of donating to his candidacy.

According to KU Athletics, Kleinman played for KU men's basketball from 2005 to 2008 under the nickname “Big Red.” His player profile lists his hometown as Overland Park.
Earlier this year, Republican Jake LaTurner announced he would not seek reelection in Kansas' 2nd Congressional District.
Former Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is running for office as a Republican. He also ran for Kansas governor in 2022, but lost to current Kansas Governor Laura Kelly. Schmidt will face former LaTurner adviser Jeff Kers, who was appointed by President Trump, in the August primary.
