new york –Police are searching for the driver of a hit-and-run that killed two people in Queens.
The aftermath of the shocking accident was captured on video. The suspect was seen getting out of the car and running. A short time later, he was seen returning to get something from the car and driving off again.
Tragic incident caught on video
Surveillance video shows two people riding scooters down 57th Avenue. Seconds later, police said the car was hit head-on by a silver Volkswagen hatchback, which then crashed into two parked cars, causing a fire.
Debris from the scooter lay on a curve in the road Sunday morning, a grim reminder of the lives lost.
A woman said she was home when she heard the crash shortly after 8 a.m., after which police shut down 57th Street near 80th Street for several hours.
“There were people on the ground on their bikes, the man was lying face down and they were giving him CPR,” the woman said.
Another woman said: “I felt really sorry for the people. I can't believe the man in the car turned around to look at the people he had injured and drove off.”
Firefighters were called to extinguish the blaze, including breaking the windows of a parked van to let the smoke out. Police said one of the men on the scooter died at the scene and the other at the hospital.
“I hope he gets caught because he literally did this. It's horrible,” the woman said.
Neighbors said the curve of 57th Street was dangerous.
The first woman said, “My area is scary because it's on a bend, so we need to put up steps and lots of slowdown signs.''
Another person said, “I want people to be more careful and watch out for cars coming out.I want them to put up slow speed signs around curves.''
