His absence was a disappointment for Brighton, who lost 2-0 to Manchester United on Sunday and finished 11th, five places down from last season.
In the post-match press conference, Mitoma expressed frustration at not being able to complete his recovery in time to return before the end of the season.
Mitoma said, “I've been running, but I'm still not in a good enough condition to play in a game right away. It's a shame because my condition has been improving, but it's important that I do my best next season.''
Mitoma was uncertain about his future at Brighton, with interest reported from several clubs, but he flourished under Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi, who left the club by mutual consent.
Mitoma said, “I'm currently under contract here, so I think I'll be playing here, but I don't know anything yet.''
Japan team-mate Takehiro Tomiyasu equalized for Arsenal with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Everton, leaving the London club two points behind reigning champions Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.
In Italy's top league, Daichi Kamata scored Lazio's opening goal in a 1-1 draw away to Inter Milan. Lazio finished in 7th place.
