AUSTIN (KXAN) — No more drums.
On Sunday, crews tore away the remaining pillars of the Frank Erwin Center, sending the skeleton of the hallowed Texas Longhorns basketball stadium and university events center to the ground in dust and rubble.
The university plans to hold an information session Monday at 2 p.m. about the final phase and demolition details for the area. Dan Cook, UT's executive director of planning, design and construction, will talk about the project, and SpawGlass project executive Ryan Schilling will lead an information session.
Built in 1977, the 500,000 square foot Erwin Center was the home of the Longhorns' men's and women's basketball until the Moody Center opened in 2022. Both programs have each won more than 500 games at the Erwin Center, and the last public event held in the building was the Harlem Globetrotters game in April 2022.
In addition to Longhorns basketball, the building also hosted extensive musical acts. John's 1978 Denver concert drew a crowd of nearly 17,900, her largest in the venue's history.
The UT Board of Regents approved a $25 million demolition project in May 2023, and demolition began the following September. UT's Dell Medical School expansion will replace the Erwin Center and the Denton A. Cooley Pavilion in the southeast corner of campus.
