With just over a week until the district tournament, the Dexter girls soccer team picked up perhaps its biggest win of the season last week as the Dreadnoughts fought back to beat the Ann Arbor Pioneers 2-1.
The win evened the Dreds' season record at 7-7-2 on a schedule that featured mostly D1 opponents. Dexter will play in Chelsea's D2 area after the Memorial Day break.
The Pioneers led 1-0 in the first half and maintained their lead in the second half.
With less than 25 minutes remaining, Lacey Jernigan received a pass in the middle of the field, turned to her left, and fired a shot from 30 yards that found the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
The Pioneers continued to apply pressure and their forwards continued to push up the field, but in the end it cost them.
With just over a minute left in the game, the Pioneer goalie took a deep ball from the Dreadnoughts. The Pioneer forwards pushed up the field, and Jernigan intercepted a clearing kick by the Pioneer goalie. She placed a shot into a wide-open net left open by the goaltender to give Dexter a 2-1 lead with 1:03 left.
Dexter ran out the remaining time and won 2-1, finishing 1-2 in the SEC Red round robin.
