COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Downtown Columbus was filled with more than 1,100 girls Sunday morning for the Girls on the Run 5K.
The race began at Columbus Commons, where coaches and other loved ones ran with the girls. The run is designed to celebrate girls in grades 3-8 who have completed a 10-week program that included important lessons in fitness, confidence and social skills.
“We have absolutely no competition in terms of physical activity,” said Sara Hyder, executive director of Central Ohio Girls on the Run. She says, “It's all about setting a goal for yourself, running at a pace that makes you happy, and crossing the finish line. That goal will be achieved for you.”
Girls on the Run is an international nonprofit organization whose teams meet twice a week. Hyder says every year is important, but this race was especially special because it was also a big milestone for them. This program currently serves over 20,000 girls in central Ohio.
“It's also a special day to commemorate that and celebrate the thousands of people who have made it possible for girls to feel confident and have the tools to achieve their dreams. ” was given,” Haider said.
