DES MOINES — Cameron Decker let his times talk.
The Dike-New Hartford senior did not qualify for the state track and field championships in an open event during his first three years of high school.

So, it makes sense that few expected him to make noise at the 2024 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships.
However, Decker let his times talk.
“I always like to let my performance do the talking,” Decker said. “Everybody that has doubted me, [I like to] show them that I can do that.”
Decker blazed a 21.88 in the boys 200-meter dash preliminary rounds on Thursday to earn the top seed in the finals.
Leading up to the finals on Saturday, Decker took his mind off the pressure of being the top seed — the one with the target on his back — and focused on the same mindset he used to find success all year long.
“Just run my race how I have been doing it all year,” Decker said. “My race is just to get out and go. Go 110% the whole way and try to beat my personal best every race.”

Decker clocked a 22.38 in the finals, winning the state championship by two tenths of a second.
“To be able to end off my high school career like this feels amazing,” Decker said.
Decker’s 200-meter dash title marks Dike-New Hartford’s first individual running event title since Lane Danielson won the 100-meter dash in 1999.
“It felt surreal,” Decker said. “It has always been my goal since my freshman year to be a state champion in something. To get that in my final race as a high school athlete feels amazing.”
He added that a few familiar faces from around the North Iowa Cedar League helped him secure a state championship performance.
“I had great competition all around me,” Decker said. “Jack Miller from Jesup, Ethan [Reiter] from Denver, close guys from my school, close guys from my conference, I think everybody in that heat just pushed each other.
“Us three always beat each other on and off all year. To be able to compete at the top — it feels amazing.”
Miller took sixth with a time of 23.26 and Reiter came in seventh, running a 23.26.
