There is another opening for the head football coach position at Smithfield-Selma High School in Johnston County.
Former head football coach George Coltharp announced Friday night on his X account that he has resigned from his position. Mr. Coulthard signed for the position on March 14th. He was hired to replace Hansel Phipps, who served as head coach for the 2023 season after Deron Donald left for Garner High School in Wake County.
The Spartans are coming off an 0-10 record on the season with 77 points.
“Due to family and health reasons, I have stepped down as head football coach at SSS,” Coltharp posted. “I would like to thank Principal Gregory and the entire faculty and staff. I wish Coach Williams the opportunity to lead his alma mater. After 25 years and much prayer, I have decided to retire from education.”
A few hours after that post, Mr. Coulthard added: “Let me clarify my previous post: Leaving teaching is financially and economically viable for me to spend my time productively.” It's also best for my family. As for my health. I'm fine…but the stress of coaching and teaching has taken a toll over the years, and I feel it's time for a fresh start. ”
Coulthard previously served as head coach at Westover High School (his alma mater) and Western Harnett High School in Cumberland County, as well as Red Springs High School and Fairmont High School in Robeson County. Immediately before taking over as head coach at SSS in March, Colthard served as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at Hobbton High School in Sampson County. He previously served as offensive coordinator at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee.
Smithfield-Selma's best season came in 1985, when the Spartans reached the 3A East regional finals, but lost in overtime to Terry Sanford.
