Mumbai Indians (MI) went into the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday, May 17 hoping for a comfortable win in front of their home fans, but MI 's loyal fans witnessed yet another disappointing result from their side as the five-time champions slipped to their 10th loss of the season, the most in an IPL campaign.
Chasing 215, MI were aiming for victory at 89/1 in 10 overs, but lost by 18 runs, a disappointing result that summed up their season.
The defeat ensured that MI would win the wooden spoon, but captain Hardik Pandya looked disappointed after the match.
“It was quite difficult. We didn't play quality cricket and ended up throwing out the whole season,” Pandya said after the match.
“It's a professional world. You always have to come forward and give your best. But certainly as a group we didn't play quality cricket or smart cricket.”
All MI can do is forget the disappointment of IPL 2024 and look forward to next season, Pandya said.
“It's too early to point out what went wrong. The whole season went wrong. We can pass this game off as another (failed) game. Now we're looking forward to next season. I have to.”
MI, who also finished last in IPL 2022, got their second wooden spoon in three seasons with this defeat. After an exceptional season in 2020, they are now winless for four seasons, finishing the 2022-24 IPL cycle without a trophy and reaching the playoffs only once.
