North Florida transfer Chaz Lanier is one of the most coveted transfers in the country and is scheduled to visit BYU Basketball this weekend, according to Travis Branham of 247Sports. Lanier, who has one year of eligibility remaining, is scheduled to visit BYU before traveling to Kentucky on Monday. He also plans to visit Tennessee.
Lanier just had a breakout junior season, averaging 19.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Lanier was one of the most capable scorers in the country while maintaining a high usage rate. He made 7.5 3-pointers per game and had an impressive 44% 3-point percentage. He shot just over 50% from the floor. According to KenPom, Lanier ranks eighth in the nation in offensive rating among players with a usage rate of 24 percent or higher.
Lanier has exceptional range. According to College Basketball Scouting, Lanier made 11 threes deeper than 25 feet last season. For context, at the men's college level, the three-point line is approximately 22 feet from the basket. The NBA three-point line is 23 feet, 9 inches above the break.
BYU's new coach, Kevin Young, could pitch Lanier for a high-usage role opportunity at BYU. The Cougars need a lot of shooters on their roster, and Lanier could fill that role. He also has the potential to develop into an NBA prospect.
BYU is still trying to fill the final five scholarships on its roster. Adding Lanier would give BYU a chance to not only qualify for the tournament, but advance in it.
