KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Youngstown State University men's basketball's all-time leading scorer Jeff Covington has been inducted into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame, founder John McCarthy announced.
This year's National Hall of Fame class is the eighth class to be inducted into the Small College Basketball National Hall of Fame. The National Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Friday, November 1st at the Polk Theater in Lakeland, Florida.
“Congratulations on your induction into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2024,” McCarthy said. “Every member of this class is clearly a worthy inductee into the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame. We are thrilled to induct them into this prestigious national hall of fame. What a great class!”
Covington, who played at Youngstown State University from 1974 to 1978, was named the 1978 Basketball Weekly College Player of the Year and was a three-time NABC Division II All-American. He earned third team honors in 1976. He won first-team honors in 1977. Covington was also selected to the 1977 Associated Press Little All-American second team.
He is YSU's all-time leading scorer with 2,424 career points and ranks second with 1,381 career rebounds. Covington is also a member of the Youngstown State Athletic Hall of Fame.
“Truly, this is a very special moment in my life and one that I will definitely share with my YSU family, surrounding townships, and my teammates,” Covington said. “We had great fans supporting our basketball team, and I will never forget their enthusiasm during the games.
“I am grateful to Coach Roselli for giving me the opportunity to play basketball at YSU and for earning my education degree.
