(ABC 6 News) – Two endurance athletes are running across the United States to help cancer patients. One of them, Roman Belmo, started his journey in New York and stopped at the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge in Rochester on Thursday night.
Belmo has been in operation for 46 years, 22 of which have been dedicated to honoring cancer patients. The American Cancer Society employee began his run on April 2nd and plans to finish it on June 2nd. He describes his journey like someone else's cancer journey.
“We thought about our first day, April 2nd, 31 miles a day, and the 1,800 miles we were going to run, as part of our cancer journey, our treatment. So we try to bring awareness and hope to the people who stay at Hope Lodge,” Belmo told ABC 6.
When he and another athlete meet at Hope Lodge in Omaha, they'll be finishing their final miles alongside cancer survivors. Both vehicles are averaging 50 miles a day and are scheduled to arrive in Omaha on June 2nd.
