BANGKOK (AP) – Brazil will host the 2027 Women's World Cup, with FIFA's full members voting to host South America over a joint proposal by Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.
FIFA Congress on Friday selected from a narrow list of two candidates to host the 2027 tournament, after a joint bid by the United States and Mexico was withdrawn late last month, and South Africa withdrew its candidacy in November.
This will be the first time that the World Women's Tournament will be held in South America.
After the results were announced, the Brazilian team celebrated by hugging each other on the podium, calling it a victory for women's soccer, their country and South America.
“We are a South American country that has won the world in women's soccer,'' said Renaldo Rodiquez, President of the Brazilian Football Federation, reflecting on the recent floods that caused damage in many parts of the country. “Our achievements today will help make South America's first Women's World Cup stronger after an event that affects all Brazilians: the climate catastrophe.”
This was the first time that all FIFA member associations had the opportunity to consult on the organizers of a women's tournament. Previously, decisions were made by the governing body's decision-making committee, the FIFA Council.
The electronic vote had 207 member organizations eligible to vote, with three options: Brazil, BNG, and abstain.
According to the results announced by FIFA, Brazil received 119 votes and the European joint bid received 78 votes.
Brazil were the favorites to win the contest, especially as they were ranked high in last week's FIFA evaluation report.
