Terre Haute, Indiana – Former Indiana State University men's basketball coach Taylor “Tates” Locke passed away earlier this week. He was 87 years old.
Coach Locke is an Indiana native who took over the basketball program in 1989 as an assistant coach to Bobby Knight. Lock doubled the number of wins in his first season following his previous staff, winning two conference games after the team went zero wins the previous season. Lock also led the Sycamores to a 7-6 home record, hitting over .500 for the first time in four seasons.
“Coach Lock was one of the great teachers of the game,” head coach said. Matthew Graves. “The first time I met him as a high school basketball player was when he recruited me to ISU. His ability to empathize and teach from the grassroots fundamental level to the highest level of the game is simply amazing. Sycamore Basketball sends its deepest condolences.”
Lock finished his tenure as coach with 50 wins, the 12th most wins in the Sycamore basketball program. Before attending Indiana State University, he spent time at Army, Miami (Ohio), Clemson and Jacksonville.
