(KRON) โ A young Hayward man is missing after fleeing an East Bay hospital in the midst of a mental health crisis, his family announced.
Dennis Chau, 25, was a patient at John George Psychiatric Hospital in San Leandro. On April 23, Dennis was taken to San Leandro Hospital for an appointment. Dennis escaped from San Leandro Hospital and he has been missing ever since, his brother Daniel Chau told KRON4.
The missing man graduated from Ivy League Brown University and was a Gates Millennial Scholar.
His family is now asking for the public's help in finding him. His brother said he should be considered a mentally ill and at-risk person. Daniel said Dennis didn't have a cell phone or money because he threw away his belongings during a previous mental health episode.
Family members are not allowed to view surveillance video from San Leandro Hospital to see what went wrong and how they were able to outrun San Leandro Hospital security. said. Doctors refused to provide information to the family because Dennis was no longer a patient at John George Psychiatric Hospital, Daniel said.
The missing man was last seen on May 12 at a park in King City, a rural area in southern Monterey County. Dennis has black hair, brown eyes, weighs 135 pounds and is 5 feet 6 inches tall.
