A huge Red Force show was put on yesterday as Campion College took on St George's College on the first day of the Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Urban U16 Cricket Final at Kensington Oval.
Campion University, who batted first, achieved a huge record of 377 wins and 7 losses from 61 overs, but St. George's University responded by finishing the day with 103 wins and 7 losses, losing 274 points to Campion University. Ta.
Campion got off to a slow start, with Jonathan Fuller dismissed for a duck. Still, the red bridge from Old Hope Road showed its indomitable spirit as captains Abraham Waugh and Zachary Buchanan completed a double-century partnership.
In the pair's first at-bat, Waugh scored 126 RBIs on 95 pitches during his shift, including 15 walks and one six. He was eventually caught and bowled by Giovanni Gray.
Buchanan followed closely in his captain's footsteps with his century, scoring 125 runs off 144 deliveries and hitting 14 fours. He was dismissed leg-before-wicket (lbw) by bowler Jadai Gray and sent back to the team's dugout.
Zachary Taylor was the next best batsman after Campion, causing problems for St George's with 73 before Xavier Charvis took his wicket into account.
Taylor's dismissal caused chaos on the wicket with Neo Xavier and Leandro Phillips unable to trouble the scorers, while Jadon Smith could only add four runs. Antoine Campbell (13) and Rhys Williams (No) were both not at home at the time of the declaration.
With the title on the line, St. George's response was ineffective, with only two batters hitting double figures at the end of the day.
Mikel Francis was the first to do so, scoring 22 runs off 38 balls, but was weighed down by Waugh.
Charvis, St George's most prolific wicket-taker, was unable to reproduce that form with the bat and sent packing for two when bowled by Campbell.
Gray scored an unbeaten 65 off 63 balls, giving his innings some respectability and proving to be St George's workhorse.
There was some drama at the end of the day, with Campion asking the referees to continue playing after the 6pm cut-off. St. George's players were furious that the referee would consider the fielder's team's request under the circumstances.
