Philip Martell is no longer a candidate to be the next superintendent of the Chartier Valley School District. School board members in Martell's current school district, River Valley, told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that Martell withdrew his name after concerns from the community. Before Chartiers Valley attorney Rebecca Hall finished announcing that Martell was withdrawing his candidacy, the unusually packed crowd erupted in applause. There was a lot of anticipation ahead of Tuesday night's school board meeting. Many families contacted WTAE ahead of the new superintendent's confirmation vote due to concerns about the candidate's past. Ms. Martel has worked in many other school districts. He previously held the titles of business manager and superintendent in the Connellsville School District. He spent time in the Wilkinsburg School District and West Mifflin Regional School District. He was also a member of the Elizabeth Forward School Board. In 2015, a lawsuit was filed by the West Mifflin Regional School District against Martell for illegally accepting his tuition refund. In 2018, a federal tax lien was filed against Martell. One parent said before the meeting that she was concerned about Chartier Valley's schedule. “Our superintendent resigned in March, and this is probably the quickest superintendent search in the history of superintendent searches,” Samantha Vollmer said. We are hurt by who is leading our schools as superintendent. โ The video below explains Martel's history and why his parents were concerned about his nomination before he dropped out.
