Former Tulane fourth-year guard Zion James announced his commitment to Duke basketball on Friday morning. Three days later, the Blue Devils officially announced his contract, citing Jon Scheyer about what the 21-year-old Georgia native will get with the program.

“We are thrilled to welcome Theon James to the Brotherhood,” said Mr. Scheier. “He is a proven leader with a high IQ and a great sense of the game. Bringing Zion to Duke not only adds talent, but further builds on the culture of competitiveness and winning attitude he has.” His versatility as a defender is a big thing. His strength and ability to improve other players offensively will improve our team.
“Zion will have a tremendous impact on and off the court, and I look forward to getting started working with him and the rest of the team.”
James responded to Duke Basketball's social media post, saying his main goal is to get an extra year of eligibility and become a Blue Devil, adding, “I can't wait to go to Durham and get No. 6.'' No!!” he commented.
The 6-foot-6, 220-pound aggressive slasher and solid defender averaged 14.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.6 steals last season for the Green Wave.
Zion James, who has demonstrated his talent as an efficient bucket getter, scored 30 points on just eight shot attempts in Tulane's win over Memphis on New Year's Day 2023. He went 4-for-4 at bats downtown and 14-for-15 at the charity tournament. He performed well in this contest, recording 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks in 40 minutes.
Zion James is the third Duke basketball player to sign a transfer contract this offseason, joining former Syracuse forward Malik Brown and Purdue forward Mason Gillis.
