The Kentucky Wildcats and Tennessee Volunteers have had many battles over the decades, and now they can add the hiring of North Florida guard Chaz Lanier to that list.
After four seasons with the Ospreys, Lanier entered the NBA Draft before declining and instead entering the transfer portal.
With one year of eligibility remaining, the veteran guard is coming off by far his best season as a college athlete, averaging nearly 20 points per game and shooting 51 percent from the field.
He's one of the best transfers left in the portal, and either Kentucky or Tennessee will likely acquire him. Lanier was invited to their camp over the weekend and participated in 5-on-5 games and individual practice.
It's clear that Lanier's goal is to make it to the NBA, and the G League is certainly a path to achieving that goal. But he will also play on the Rupp Arena floor and in many nationally televised games throughout the season, which will also help his draft stock.
That's not even taking into account his efficiency (44% from 3-point range last season) and the fact that Mark Pope's offense sounds like a match made in heaven.
