The Colorado High School Boys Class 5A Swimming and Diving State Championships began Friday in Thornton, Colo., with swim preliminaries and Saturday's final session, with the Cherry Creek boys winning all three relays and adding three more wins. It was an overwhelming victory for the 2024 5A team.
CHSAA 4A and 5A swim classes are determined by school enrollment, with 4A schools having approximately less than 1600 students and 5A schools having attendance of more than 1600 students.
The Cherry Creek team won with an overwhelming score of 458.50 points, which was the first 5A team win since 2021, beating Regis Jesuit's 306.50 points by 152 points. (For historical swimming geeks, Regis Jesuit is an Olympic champion missy franklin(alma mater). Highlands Ranch comfortably placed third with 263 points, and Fossil Ridge held off Fairview by 10.50 points for fourth place, 215.50 to 205. Smoky Hill also held off Columbine by one point for sixth place, 198-197.
As mentioned earlier, Cherry Creek swept all three relays. The 200 meter medley relay started with a winning time of 1 minute 29.12 seconds. Johnson, a senior at Cherry Creek who attends Georgia Tech, defended his 100 fly title with a time of 47.33 seconds, fourth in Colorado history. Shinberg, a Grand View junior, finished runner-up in the competition with a score of 48.37, and the Rocky Mountain sophomore took first place. Samuel Lofstrom I took 3rd place with 49.00.

Fairview finished second in 3:02.69, followed by Columbine (3:04.53). Cherry Creek's winning time of 3:01.16 was the fifth-fastest time in Colorado history, falling short of Columbine's 2021 record of 3:00.37, but marking the fastest 400 free relay since 2021.
The swim was the highlight of the session. He still beat Cone's 28.62 split and broke both 5A and Colorado state records.
