Another highly touted former basketball player is headed to Seton Hall via the transfer portal.
Zion Harmon, a 6-foot sophomore point guard from Bethune-Cookman, joined the Pirates on Saturday. He is Hall's fifth transfer for the 2024-25 season, four of whom are rated four-stars out of high school.
Here are three things to know about Harmon, who has two years of eligibility remaining.
1. He was a youth basketball genius.
Harmon, a Maryland native, played two years of high school ball during his junior high school years, joined the U.S. U-16 National Team, and was a unanimous four-star, top-75 player in the Class of 2021. Seton Hall was one of his players. A suitor at the time, Harmon took an official visit to then-South Orange before choosing Western Kentucky. His other official stops as a high school student were Kansas State, Maryland and Louisville.
However, he never played at Western Kentucky, dropping out of school midway through the 2021-22 season and then transferring to Bethune-Cookman. “For personal reasons,” Western Kentucky coach Rick Stansbury said at the time.
Worth noting: As a result of his genius days, Harmon has 217,000 Instagram followers.
2. He produced as a lead guard for Bethune-Cookman.
In two seasons with the Wildcats, Harmon averaged 14.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 2.9 turnovers per game. He shot 39% from the field, .299 from 3-point range and .876 from the free throw line.
He was named first-team All-SWAC last season after earning second-team and Freshman of the Year honors in 2022-23. The Wildcats finished the 2023-24 season with a 17-17 record, including 11-7 in the SWAC.
Harmon's sophomore high-major performance: 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, 2 steals, 3 turnovers, 7 points on 3-of-9 shooting in the loss to Minnesota. , had 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 turnovers. He lost at Mississippi State. In his freshman year, he had 15 points, seven assists, and three turnovers in a loss (5-of-18 shooting) against Iowa.
3. He will share point guard duties with Hall.
There's no one to replace Cadary Richmond, and Pirates coach Shaheen Holloway says he prefers to split playmaking duties among his three guards, rather than relying on a lead dog to dominate the ball. It was revealed that it was a style. It seems clear that Harmon and Old Dominion transfer Chance Jenkins will be two of them.
Adding an impactful big man will be a priority now. Seton Hall has recently received visits from Churchill Abbas, a transfer from DePaul, and Ezra Orser, a transfer from East Carolina. stay tuned.
