Auburn High School soccer left the hardware in Huntsville on Saturday as the girls program shut out Hoover 1-0 to capture the Class 7A state championship and its first state title.
The difference was the defense, where junior defender Laila Simmons was named the Class 7A Tournament MVP and played a key role for Auburn High School, which won a shutout all the way to the Final Four.
Hoover attempted just five shots on target in Saturday's game, and Auburn High goalie Melissa Smith deflected all five.
The only goal of the game came in the 25th minute when Peyton Bishop made his only shot of the night.
However, the Auburn High School boys soccer team was unable to pull off a victory and advanced to Saturday's Class 7A title game, where they lost 3-0 to an undefeated Oak Mountain team.
