In the eyes of co-coach Sonny Vincent, the May 1 home soccer game against Dawson was a very good game. The girls gave it their all and never gave up. Although they maintained the pace with the Mustangs who had the advantage in the early stages, they were unable to make any shots and lost 3-0.
For the Eagles' next game, the girls headed to Union Colony in Greeley focused, knowing they needed a win to qualify for the playoffs. Gilpin got off to a strong start, scoring the opening goal within the first 10 minutes on a long pass from Annabelle Arroel to Gisele Osteboe. The girls also scored four more points in the first half alone. Halftime score: Gilpin 5, Union Colony 0.
The Eagles' scoring frenzy continued in the second half, adding four more goals. This is the second time this year that the Eagles have scored nine points in one game. In total, Kylie Starkey had four goals, Gisele Osteboe had three goals, and Gretchen Osteboe and Adele Fisher each added one goal to round out the day's scoring. Elise Vincent provided support with four assists. The defense was solid, conceding only one point in the entire game. Final score: Gilpin 9, Union Colony 1.
The girls had a great season, finishing the year with a record of 6 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw. They persevered against the state's top-ranked teams, keeping up with each of them and showing skill, grit, determination, and good sportsmanship in the process. Their efforts earned them the No. 15 seed for the regional tournament. They will play the first round of the tournament against Denver Christian at Denver Christian School in Lakewood on Friday, May 10th at 3:30 p.m.
