Gardner is a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward from Waynesboro, Georgia. He played high school ball at Christ the King High School in New York City and was named Mr. Basketball as a junior after averaging 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
He initially opted to stay local, signing a letter of intent with St. John's University before releasing his assignment and heading west. Gardner appeared in only one game for the Trojans (four minutes and two points total) as he redshirted due to his foot injury.
Gardner is considered a three-star transfer by 247Sports.
He also dunked against then-USC quarterback and future No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Caleb Williams in a dunk contest.

Gardner will be ASU's fifth transfer as Bobby Hurley's program plans to move beyond the 14-18 season.
The Sun Devils added guards Austin Nunez and Alston Mason, forward B.J. Freeman and center Bashid Jihad to the transfer portal. Frankie Collins and Jamiyah Neal left ASU in the portal.
ASU also received a commitment from freshman Jaden Quaintance, the No. 2 center prospect in the 2024 recruiting class.
