Former University of Colorado sophomore running back Alton McCaskill IV has committed to ASU after appearing in four games for the Buffaloes last season, according to ESPN.
McCaskill had 14 carries for 59 yards last year and decided to redshirt the rest of the season and secure a year of eligibility. While he didn't have much to show for in his time in Boulder, what makes McCaskill so intriguing is his outstanding true freshman season in Houston in 2021.
According to ESPN, McCaskill had 189 carries, 961 rushing yards, 16 rushing touchdowns and 113 receiving yards during the Cougars' 12-2 season. McCaskill's touchdown record set Houston's true freshman rushing touchdown record, and he also led all true freshmen in the country.
MacAskill's impressive performance earned him the 2021 American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year award.
After an impressive 2021 season, McCaskill tore his ACL in the spring of 2022 and redshirted for next season. McCaskill now comes to Tempe with the hopes of having three years of eligibility remaining.
The Texas native is 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighs 200 pounds, and has a 40-yard dash speed of 4.48 seconds.
Head coach Kenny Dillingham has used the transfer portal to create a good environment and team as the Sun Devils prepare for their Big 12 debut. Dillingham has a potentially great running back duo and appears to have an offense poised for success.
ASU's main ground game option last season was senior running back Cam Skatebo. The Sun Devil running back had a great season in 2023, with 164 carries, 783 rushing yards, and 286 receiving yards despite the team's lackluster play.
If McCaskill builds on the success of his freshman season and works well with Skatebo as the team's primary back, the Sun Devil backfield could be deadly.
