BURLINGTON, Vt. – Less than two years after their first game, Vermont Green FC has announced the addition of a women’s team.
“It has always been a goal for us to have women's teams and female representation in the club,” club co-founder Pat Inferna said.
This year, the team, also known as Vermont Green FC, will play only one game, an exhibition match against FC Laval of Ligue 1 Quebec on June 22nd.
So far, only five players have signed on to be part of the new Green FC. Everyone is used to wearing green and playing at Virtue Field as part of UVM women's soccer.
Regarding the player who moved from the Catamounts to Green FC, Inferna said, “That's the best way to go.'' “We've got five great players, including Oliva White from Vermont. Having that kind of representation on the team is really important to how we want this to look and feel and how we want to grow. very important.”
“This is something I've always dreamed of and a lot of Vermont girls have dreamed of,” said White, a midfielder from Pittsford. “I’m really excited that Vermont Green is taking this step toward pursuing a women’s team in the future.”
It's an exciting future. Since 2008, we have seen semi-pro soccer flourish in the state with the Vermont Lady Voltage and, most recently, the Vermont Fusion. Both teams are currently inactive. Green FC wants to build on that success, but it wants to do it right.
“When this team plays a full season, we're going to take the time necessary to make sure it's the best product possible for our fans and for the players who want to play for us,” Inferna said. Told. “We want to make a splash. We want people to pay attention to this community, this city, this state.”
A head coach has not yet been named, but UVM women's soccer head coach Christy Huizenga and U.S. women's national team World Cup champion Sam Mewes are members of the advisory board.
“Being able to talk to her and interact with her and be able to say I met Sam Mewis is just a dream come true,” White said.
Forward Jill Brody said, “I respect her and the whole team respects her.” She said, “So many little girls look up to her, so I think it would be really great to have her as a person and as an icon to energize this movement.'' [project] And maybe spread it. ”
It all starts at the end of June and the expectations have already begun.
“I basically believe this will be one of the biggest games of the summer,” Inferna said. “I think this community understands what this club is trying to achieve and I think there's a lot of interest in women's football. This game is going to be a shambles. We're going to see this at Virtue Field. It's going to be something I've never seen before, and it's going to be really fun.”
“I hope it's loud and loud. I hope you see that green smoke,” Brody said of the green smoke present after the Vermont Green FC men's team's win at Virtue Field. talked about.
As Vermont continues to prove its allegiance to the sport of soccer, it looks like the Green FC fan base will definitely be paying attention to the Women in Green this summer.
