AUSTIN — The Texas Longhorns finished 21-13 in head coach Rodney Terry's first full season and won their third consecutive NCAA Tournament title this March.
Heading into the 2024-25 season, Terry's roster will look completely different than the one that made it to the Elite Eight in 2023, but the Longhorns will enter the season after reshuffling a ton of talent through the transfer portal. I have certain expectations for the future. 2024 recruiting class.
ESPN recently released its premature Top 25 rankings, and considering how Texas spent this offseason, the Longhorns came in at No. 20.
ESPN commented on the ranking as follows:
Texas is another school that has a love-hate relationship with the transfer portal and offseason. Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell are gone, as is top-50 rookie Cam Scott. Players scheduled to participate are Tramon Mark (Arkansas State), Jason Kent (Indiana State), Julian Lally (Indiana State), and Jordan Pope (Oregon State). At least three are likely to be starters. Rodney Terry also acquired Tre Johnson, one of the elite scorers and top-five prospect in the 2024 high school class. The key will be whether Kadin Shedrick can play with a certain sense of stability.
Here's ESPN's projected starting lineup for Texas, which could change as the Longhorns look to add additional players to their frontcourt.
– Jordan Pope
– Tramon Mark
– Tre Johnson
– Jason Kent
– Kadin Shedrick
Longhorns add transfer commitments and subsequent signings from Oregon State's Jordan Pope, Arkansas State's Tramon Mark, Vanderbilt's Malik Pressley, Indiana State's Julian Lary and Jason Kent did. Texas also brings back 2023 breakout guard Chendal Weaver and five-star freshman Tre Johnson, bringing potential one-and-done talent to Austin.
Texas will now leave the tough Big 12 and head to the SEC. Only time will tell how the Longhorns fare on the hardwood in their new conference, as they are coming off an overall successful season.
