san antonio – The University of Texas at San Antonio forward has committed to play basketball for the Big Ten's Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Trey Edmonds, a 6-foot-10, 255-pound junior who started 32 games for the Roadrunners last year, officially announced his decision after entering the transfer portal.
“We are excited to add Trey to our program,” said Minnesota head coach Ben Johnson. “Trey is a top-notch young man who comes from a great family. We get to see firsthand what kind of player Trey is and his best basketball is ahead of him and that's exciting. Offensive Trey has a passion for growth and winning. He is excited to grow as a player and join a successful program. .”
Edmonds scored 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting in 19 minutes before fouling out in last season's 102-76 loss to UTSA against the Golden Gophers on Nov. 10.
That year, Edmonds averaged a career-high 7.0 points and 5.8 rebounds in 22 minutes per game. He chose Minnesota over Mississippi State and Cincinnati after his official weekend visit, according to the Star Tribune.
Edmonds has one season of playing eligibility remaining. He previously played two seasons at Utah Tech, appearing in 53 games.
He becomes the fifth player signed by the Gophers through the portal this spring.
“It was a great time in Minnesota,” he told the Star Tribune. “I really liked it there.”
