Hall of Fame coach feels loss of Stoglin
Before becoming a coach, Stoglin was a 6-foot-4 guard at Texas Western (now known as Texas-El Paso). He made a lifelong friend in future Hall of Fame coach Nolan Richardson. Nolan Richardson was a senior when Stoglin was a sophomore. Both played for Hall of Fame coach Don Haskins. Mr. Stoglin attended UTEP from 1962 to 1965 and is in the school's Hall of Fame.
Richardson said they both grew up together in school and are best friends and work colleagues. They have done everything together since they met.
Richardson said when he took the Tulsa coaching job in 1980, it was a complete rebuild. He called Stoglin and told him he needed him. Stoglin “will be there tomorrow,” Richardson said.
Richardson said Stoglin simply wanted to help build another program. Richardson is in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and is the only coach to win the coaching triple crown, winning the NJCAA, NIT and NCAA championships.
Richardson remembers the last time she saw Stoglin at the hospital three weeks ago. Richardson said she spoke to Stoglin every day and was heartbroken when Stoglin's daughter, Lynne, called her and told her he had died.
“It's a big empty feeling,” Richardson said. “There's still a big emptiness. Of course, the more time passes, the emptiness will get bigger. It's an emptiness that you can't really feel, and it still doesn't feel like he's gone.”
Richardson described their relationship as “brothers from different mothers.”
“I didn't have any brothers, so Andy is probably the closest thing I have to a brother,” Richardson said. “We're much closer than real brothers.”
Funeral arrangements and a memorial service will be determined at a later date, Stephanie Stoglin said. Services will include a memorial service in Jackson and interment in Phoenix, Arizona.
