BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) — Bucks County officials say a new video enforcement program has caught thousands of drivers running red lights at two of their busiest intersections.
On April 1, Bensalem Township began a 60-day pilot program at Street Road and Knights Road, along Route 1 at Old Lincoln Highway.
Sergeant Glenn Vandegrift said both areas are among the most accident-prone areas in the region.
“We want to change behavior,” Vandegrift said. “A few years ago, Knights Road City Road was named one of the most dangerous intersections in America, so it's really important for us to do whatever we can to build some kind of deterrent.”
Vandegrift said more than 5,200 alerts were issued in the first 30 days alone.
Starting June 1, drivers who are caught will face violations that include a $100 fine. All money raised will be used to fund the installation of the cameras, along with the cost of having officers verify each ticket issued.
Officials also said if red light cameras continue to reduce traffic accidents, they will consider installing more cameras throughout the town.
