INDIANAPOLIS — It was just after midnight on May 6, 2023, when 27-year-old Darian Wiley and 24-year-old Olivia Brown were shot in cold blood during what appeared to be a botched robbery.
The incident happened in the Kennedy-King neighborhood near 21st Street and Central Avenue.
New surveillance video obtained by FOX59/CBS4 shows the moments leading up to the double murder.
Wiley is seen walking Brown to a car parked on the street. Only a few minutes later, two hooded men are seen following them. The video then shows two hooded men fleeing the scene.
The identity of those hooded men remains a mystery.
“What happened was completely nonsensical,” said Darian's father, Darrell Hutchinson.
Hutchinson could hear the pain in her voice as she stood at the scene where her son was murdered a year ago. This past year has been the most difficult thing he's ever experienced.
“If I didn't have the support system I had, it would have been much harder,” Hutchinson said through tears.
He described his son as kind, courteous, a go-getter and a friend to many.
“He was very energetic. He loved to have fun. That's not the case anymore,” said Darian's stepmother, Betricka Howard Hutchinson. “They… took something precious from us.”
His stepmother said his influence in his short life was profound. Her shirt features a photo of her and Darian from the day Darian graduated from Arsenal Technical High School.
It was only last month that the school awarded him the first-ever Darian Wiley Mentor of the Year Award, named in his honor.
But she said it's still no consolation that Darian is no longer here.
The family is now focused on getting justice for him. They are appealing for the killer to come forward and anyone with information to speak to detectives.
“The people who did this, I'm praying for them too,” Darian's father said. “I pray for them too, because one day they will have to answer to our Father.”
IMPD said Monday that it had no major updates to share regarding the incident.
