South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem stands by a passage in her upcoming book in which she appears to say she would also kill President Biden's problem dog Commander, bragging that the president's puppy shot him. He quipped that he would “say hello” to his puppy, Cricket.
Noem, 52, stressed that the commander, who was fired from the White House last fall after dozens of reports of him biting people, posed safety concerns to his staff and Secret Service agents.
“Joe Biden's dog attacked 24 Secret Service agents. So how many people will be attacked, enough to cause dangerous injuries, before deciding whether to get a dog?”? โ Noem said Sunday on CBS' “Face the Nation.”
“That's an issue for which the president should take responsibility.”
The Republican, who was mentioned as former President Donald Trump's running mate, dodged host Margaret Brennan's question about whether he said he should be shot.
The White House announced in February that Biden, 81, had handed over the commander to a relative as a more permanent solution after revelations about multiple bite incidents and a German shepherd taking blood from Secret Service agents. did.
Noem's name has long been swirled as a possible running mate for Trump. However, she became embroiled in controversy after a preview of her book revealed a passage about her shooting her dog.
“I hated that dog,” Noem recalled of the female wire-haired pointer previewed by the Guardian. “[Cricket was] Dangerous to anyone she comes into contact with. โ
Noem then spoke about shooting the family's billy goat, which had a “nasty, musky, foul-smelling” odor, for “chasing children.”
The governor was adamant that she was not trying to celebrate the shooting, but simply to explain the “tough decision” she had to make at the ranch nearly 20 years ago.
“I made a difficult choice. I'm sure you are also a mother and have small children. Would you choose your child or a dangerous animal?” Nomu asked rhetorically.
“What I'm tired of in this country is politicians who act like they're something they're not. They don't want to have the difficult conversations.”
Nomu went on to explain that “we trained this dog for months” to no avail, and that Cricket was from another family with similar problems.
Visit to North Korea
Another point of controversy caused by Noem's book was a passage in which she twice described a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whom she originally referred to as “the president.”
โI remember when I met North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un,โ she wrote. “I think he underestimated me, not knowing anything about my experience looking down on little tyrants (I was a children's pastor).”
Noem said she has since worked to correct that passage in her book.
On Sunday, Noem declined to say whether she actually met with the North Korean dictator or traveled to the Hermit Kingdom, something U.S. officials have rarely done.
“I'm not going to talk about specific meetings with world leaders. I'm not going to do that,” she said. “This anecdote should not have been in the book, so as soon as this anecdote was brought to my attention, I made sure it was corrected.”
But she claimed to have visited the pariah state.
โThis book has a lot of details about going to the DMZ. [demilitarized zone] “We would be happy to share more details,” she said. “There are some details I don't want to share.”
The DMZ is a heavily guarded area in South Korea near the border, from which tourists and others may come within sight of North Korea.
Brennan confronted Noem about how she didn't notice the obvious mistake about meeting Kim while recording the audio for her book.
โI took action to make sure that [corrected]โ Noem emphasized.
Her book will be in stores on Tuesday.
At the Republican National Committee's spring meeting in Palm Beach on Saturday, President Trump huddled with top executives who are presumed to be his running mate.
Noem participated in part of the withdrawal, but left early, NBC reported. In the RNC rally reading, she was not listed as one of the candidates who shared the stage with Trump.
