Badger basketball has had a turbulent offseason since a disappointing and abrupt end to the season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Badgers are making a lot of moves, so let's take a look at how they deserve to perform in each area.
The coaching staff remains largely unchanged, aside from the departure of assistant coach Dean Oliver. Greg Gard received an annual extension, and although the seats were a little warm, he was never in danger of losing his job this season. Assistant head coach Joe Kravenhoft, who had been rumored to become head coach, will also return. Kirk Penny will remain in his role as special assistant. Sharif Chambliss was a key piece of this year's recruitment and remains a valuable asset. Overall, the guards and the staff around them remain a solid group despite some fans' concerns about recruitment. Grade: B
The Badgers really struggled to retain talent this offseason, as seven players entered the transfer portal, including stars AJ Storer and Chucky Hepburn. Really, the only reason they don't get an F rating here is that they've managed to retain a few core players in John Blackwell and Max Klemmit. It's hard to blame the Badgers or the players themselves for leaving. In his current NIL situation, there is no downside to players trying to find more money elsewhere. But it's still a bitter pill to swallow to see so much production withdrawn. Grade: D
The portal is closed, but the Badgers may not be finished. They have already made three new transfers and could add a fourth. The Guard has added some good players with the additions of Camren Hunter, Xavier Amos, and John Tonge. Since they primarily come from mid-majors, there may be some concerns about how they will adapt to competition at the Big Ten level, but overall this trio is very exciting. The Badgers have done a great job of finding good value within the portal. Grade: B
