New Delhi: Worcestershire Cricket Club on Thursday announced the passing of 20-year-old spin bowler Josh Baker. The club has not disclosed his cause of death.
Baker, a left-arm spinner, made his first-class debut for the club in 2021. He played in two County Championship games this season, his last appearance coming against Durham at Kidderminster in April.
Overall, Baker played 47 matches across all formats and took 70 wickets.
Worcestershire chief executive Ashley Giles shared his deep sadness and said: “We are all devastated by the news of Josh's death. Josh was more than just a teammate, he was an integral part of our cricket family. He was a non-existent presence.”
“We will all miss him very much. We send all our love and prayers to Josh's family and friends.”
In 2023, Baker signed a three-year contract with Worcestershire Cricket Club. That season he played in five Championship matches and was instrumental in Worcestershire's promotion from Championship Division Two.
A club statement on Thursday said: “More than his skill as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and contagious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met.
