Associate head coach Marisa Cannella is transferring from West Virginia women's soccer, it was announced Wednesday, ending her 14-season run with the program.
WVU announced Canela's departure from the X program, thanked her for her dedication to the program, and wished her well in her future endeavors. Head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown also shared a heartfelt message for Canela on her X account, detailing her accomplishments they shared as her coach.
Canela spent four seasons as a player at West Virginia University from 2002 to 2005, earning his bachelor's degree in 2007. He began coaching the team that same year and served as a volunteer assistant until completing his master's degree in 2009.
As a player, Canela made an immediate impact, earning Big East All-Rookie Team honors in 2002. She was named to her All-Big East Second Team in 2004 and First Team in 2005. West Virginia University won all four of her NCAA Tournament tournaments. About Canela's active days.
In 2010, Cannella became an assistant coach with the Mountaineers, a position he held until 2016 before being promoted to associate head coach. Cannella led WVU to nine conference championships during his 14 years on staff, including five consecutive Big 12 championships from 2012 to 2016.
