Ruturaj Gaikwad's exclusion and Shubman Gill's inclusion in India's T20 World Cup squad as a reserve has irked former Indian cricketer Krishnamachari Srikanth. The legendary cricketer, who was part of India's champion team in the 1983 ODI World Cup, has accused the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of “favoritism”.
“Shubman Gill is completely out of form. Why was he selected in the team? There is no doubt that Ruturaj Gaikwad deserves to play. He has scored over 500 runs in 17 innings. He also scored a hundred against Australia,” Srikanth said. His YouTube channel “Cheeky Cheeka”.
During the discussion, the legendary opening batsman spoke to his son Anirudh Srikanth. Anirudh himself is a cricketer. He used to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Krishnamachari Srikanth has been candid about how much he likes his IPL team. He has repeatedly shown enthusiastic support for his 'home' team.
“Shubman Gill is a selector's delight. Even if he fails, he has a chance. Even if he fails in Tests, ODIs and T20s, he will find his place. There is too much bias in selection. Team selection It’s all based on patronage,” he added.
Ruturaj and Shubman in IPL 2024
Ruturaj is enjoying a great IPL 2024. So far he has scored 509 runs in 10 innings. In the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), he was the team's lone warrior. The CSK captain's 62 off 48 balls helped him dethrone Virat Kohli and win the Orange Cap. However, King Kohli is holding his breath as he hits 500, just nine runs behind.
However, Shubman Gill was not at his best during this tournament. He scored 320 runs in 10 innings. He is far from competing for the Orange Cap, which is awarded to the tournament's highest run-getter. His teammate Sai Sudarsan has far surpassed him with 418 runs in the same number of innings.
