The spring transfer portal for college basketball underclassmen closed on April 30th, and some big names put their names in the ring in the final days before the deadline. Here we break down the biggest transfer portal news and updates in the weeks leading up to the portal deadline.
College Basketball Transfer Portal Updates as of April 30th
Aidan Mahaney transfers from St Mary's University to University College
The reigning national champions have acquired another veteran in the transfer portal as St. Mary's Gaels guard Aidan Mahaney heads to the Big East. Mahaney was the leading scorer on a Gaels team that won the conference championship in 2023-24. UW is losing a lot of talent from this year's starting roster this offseason, and will need an experienced player like Mahaney to lead a team starting from scratch.
Naushad Omie announces transfer
Miami Hurricanes forward Norchad Omie will be leaving the 305 after leading the Canes in scoring and rebounding during the 2023-24 season. Omie has one season of eligibility remaining, and he entered the portal with a “no contact” clause meaning he knows his next destination. But we can expect to see him appear at a program as high-profile, if not more so, than Miami's Uga Poplar also entered the portal last week.
Cadary Richmond enters transfer portal
Richmond averaged 15.7 points, 7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 2.2 steals per game for the Seton Hall Pirates last season, leading the team in each stat. After entering the portal, Richmond has set its sights on another location, but its landing location has not yet been announced. However, it is expected that the sport's biggest names will take the guard with the highest upside of any portal player.
Jeremy Roach transfers from Duke to Baylor
Roach was a mainstay of the Blue Devils' offense the past two seasons, but will be headed to the Big XII to join the Baylor Bears. Roach, who averaged 14 points per game last season at Duke, will take over point guard duties from Ray J. Dennis in Waco for his final season of eligibility.
Mason Gillis transferred from Purdue to Duke
Gillis, the Big Ten 2024 Sixth Man of the Year, is headed to Raleigh-Durham. Gillis spent five years as a Boilermaker, winning a Big Ten title and earning a national championship berth with the team. The small forward will play alongside other new starters as Duke lost several key players to the NBA Draft and transfer portal this offseason.
Lamont Butler transfers from SDSU to Kentucky
Butler was late to enter the transfer portal, but was quickly acquired by Mark Pope's Wildcats. Butler is a highly talented defender who led the Aztecs in assists during the 2022-23 season and helped SDSU reach the national championship. He was named the 2023 MWC Defensive Player of the Year. The Wildcats are in a rebuilding season after the departure of John Calipari this offseason, and a veteran starter will be essential to the program's success.
