The Nigeria Cricket Federation has revealed plans to organize a national league from next year as a means of spreading the game of cricket to different parts of the country, The Punch reported.
While several regional leagues are being held in different parts of the country, the NCF said it is working on a model in the form of the Indian Premier League.
Existing leagues in the country include the Club Cricket Committee League in Lagos, the Edo Cricket League, the South South Women's Cricket League, as well as leagues in Port Harcourt and Kaduna.
NCF Chairman, Mr Wee Akpata, said the establishment of the national league would help decentralize and increase the popularity of cricket in Nigeria.
“For over 10 years, we have been running the CCC League in Lagos. When I took over as state chairman, we also had the Edo Cricket League and it has been running for five years now,” Akpata told SuperSport. Told.
“We have the Port Harcourt League and the Kaduna League and we want to develop them.
“More importantly, we want to have a Nigeria Super League like the IPL. So it would be really big and hopefully it will happen next year. It's in development.
“We weren’t sure if it would be a purely independent model or if we would bring together winners from different regional leagues, but it is clear that it will work for both men and women.”
Akpata said the South-South Women's Cricket League, the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, had helped keep most of the players in the women's national team, which won a historic bronze medal at the 2023 Ghana-Africa Games, in shape.
