History of ice hockey at FISU
Ice hockey is the most popular team sport on the ice and has been an important part of FISU games for many years. The first men's ice hockey tournament at the Universiade Winter Games was held in Villars, Switzerland in 1962 and involved four teams: 1. Czechoslovakia. 2. Soviet Union. 3. Sweden. 4. Switzerland.
Since 1962, the men's ice hockey tournament has been part of the Winter Universiade/FISU Games program and is one of the most attractive sports of FISU's winter events. In 2009 in Harbin, China, he participated in a newly added women's tournament in which six countries participated. This was the case with his 2011 Erzurum Winter Universiade, which featured six teams and his 122 players, and continues to grow, with eight teams competing in the 2023 Lake Placid FISU Games. Thanks to the good cooperation between FISU and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), FISU continues to follow the development of ice hockey as an international university sport.
