The UNC Basketball program is finally in the transfer portal!
On Sunday afternoon, it was announced that Belmont transfer Cade Tyson has officially committed to North Carolina. The announcement comes just one week after Tyson's official visit to Chapel Hill, where Tyson officially posted the news on social media.
The rumors have essentially continued since Tyson arrived on campus, as Xayavier Ricks posted the news ahead of time Saturday afternoon.
This is a great acquisition for Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels, as Tyson provides the shooting ability the program wanted in the transfer portal.
Last season, Tyson was a deadly weapon on offense, averaging 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Based on the NCAA's 3-point shooting percentage metrics, Tyson ranks second in the nation for the 2023-2024 season.
With the departures of Cormac Ryan and Harrison Ingram, finding a legitimate scoring option is at the top of the UNC basketball program's to-do list. The Tar Heels have acquired one of the best shooters available in the transfer portal, so Cade Tyson can now officially be added to the Tar Heels' plans for the 2024-2025 season.
Tyson will likely be considered as a “stretch four” as he could essentially be asked to fill a role similar to what Brady Manek and Harrison Ingram have played over the past few seasons. He could also find time on the wing if the Tar Heels choose to utilize a larger lineup at the point this season.
Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program still have three scholarships remaining, but finding another forward (and preferably a true center) will be the focus of North Carolina's recruiting efforts.
Tar Heel fans have waited long enough to look forward to seeing Cade Tyson in a Carolina blue uniform this season.
