Montezuma Cortez High School Panthers.
In honor of the five seniors who played in the Montezuma-Cortez girls soccer team's final game, the Panthers closed out their spring season with a scoreless draw against Pagosa Springs on Saturday.
The Panthers created chances up front in the final home game and dominated the final 15 minutes, but were unable to break through.
The Panthers finished the 2024 season in third place in the 3A Southwest League with a 3-5-3 record.
“We faced a lot of adversity, especially injuries, but we really found girls who were willing to take on roles that they might not be used to,” Panthers first-year coach Melody Harris said.
Defenders Alyssa Brittain and Grace Dallin, midfielder Anna Jensen, and strikers Mikayla Puyette and Janae Boyd all ended their high school careers.
Throughout the spring season, Montezuma-Cortez outscored opponents 22-17 with Britten and Dallin anchoring a back four.
The Panthers have a combined record of 20-15-5 over the past three seasons, winning two league titles in the process.
“They really understood the need for a positive approach to each other and were able to develop the mentality to work as a cohesive unit,” Harris said.
