Jefferson City High School has found a new leader for its boys basketball program. The Jefferson City School District announced Thursday that Ethan Williams will be the next head coach of the Jays boys basketball team, replacing former head coach Josh Buffington, who is retiring after the 2023-24 season.
“It is an honor and a dream come true to assume the role of head boys basketball coach at Jefferson City High School,” Williams said in a press release Thursday. “I intend to continue the success and tradition of Jays basketball through discipline, dedication and hard work, and I look forward to being a part of the JC School family and the Jefferson City community for many years to come.”
Williams spent the past 12 years at Fatima High School, serving as an assistant coach for both baseball and basketball. During his career as an assistant coach with the Comets, Williams helped lead Fatima to six district championships, three Final Four appearances and one state championship.
“We are excited to welcome Ethan Williams to the coaching staff at Jefferson City High School. We have a very competitive pool of applicants, and we are confident that Ethan's experience will position our team for both short- and long-term success.” We believe in it,” Jefferson City High School Activities Director Ehren Earlywine said in a press release. “He is one of the best young up-and-coming coaches in the state and I am confident he will have a positive impact on our Jay basketball program and our players.”
Pending approval from the Jefferson City Schools Board of Education, Ms. Williams will also serve as assistant director of activities for Jefferson City High School.
Jefferson City Boys Basketball has made consecutive appearances in the MSHSAA Final Four, finishing third in the 2022-23 season and second last season.
