New USC men's basketball head coach Eric Musselman had to make several decisions when building his staff.
Returning to the West Coast, it made sense to target someone with deep ties to the region. Getting a coach with experience as a player himself would be an added bonus.
Will Conroy is perfect for this role. The Seattle native, a former star player at the University of Washington, has had an illustrious professional career, including stints with his NBA team and numerous teams overseas.
Conroy has been an assistant coach at his alma mater since 2015. Conroy became interim head coach when Mike Hopkins was relieved of his duties. Ultimately, the Huskies chose to hire Danny Sprinkle from Utah State.
With Conroy at a standstill in his career, Musselman made the wise decision to bring him on as one of his most experienced assistant coaches.
At 41 years old, Conroy is not far from his playing days. He's the type of guy known for his immense skill in player development. Additionally, you have to assume he can use his deep connections at Northwestern in the recruiting arena.
Seattle has always been a talent-rich city for prep basketball players, and the Portland metropolitan area has been making strides in that department as well.
For Conroy, this allows him to diversify his coaching career away from the University of Washington. Musselman himself is a very experienced coach and has many connections in both the college game and the NBA.allow him
It wouldn't be surprising to see Conroy eventually become a head coach somewhere if he wants to go down that path.
