The Moapa Valley High School boys volleyball team earned a victory against the visiting Cristo Rey St. Viator team on Monday night, April 15th. However, the results were not so good.
Although the Pirates defeated the Royals in three sets at home, 26-16, 25-18, 25-17, their players were sluggish and looked like they were struggling throughout the match.
The team had missed practice the previous week due to the Clark County Fair, and some of their teammates were working during that time. Two players, Cale Freeman and David Walker, are still on injured reserve.
“We made a lot of mistakes,” MVHS coach Tiffany Frederick said. “But we won in three sets and came out on top.”
MVHS sophomore Tag Jensen led the team with eight kills. Jimmy Ward and Mateo Bradshaw each scored 13 points in the win on the night.
On Thursday, April 18th, the Pirates traveled to Las Vegas to take on Mater Academy East in Las Vegas.
The Pirates beat the Knights, but it wasn't easy. The match dragged on to five sets and was won.
“It took the boys one set just to get off the bus,” Frederick said.
Mehta had his sights set on target, but found it difficult to contain the ball. However, the Knights were unable to get a hit from Brigham Whitmore. He twisted his ankle on Monday, but that didn't stop him. He led in kills, making 12 of 19.
They won 3-2 with set scores of 16-25, 26-19, 24-26, 25-22, and 15-11.
MVHS finished the week with 9 wins and 3 losses in league play.
The final three games of the regular season are all home games and will be a challenge for the Pirates.
On Tuesday 23rd April, the team will host Somerset Academy Rothesay.
And on Thursday, the Pirates will host reigning Nevada state champions Boulder City.
To conclude the regular season, MVHS will host a rivalry match against Virgin Valley on Monday, April 29th, which will be the Pirates' Senior Night.
All games will be played at 6 p.m. in Gary Batchelor Gymnasium.
