Oregon State transfer quarterback Aidan Chiles was the center of attention at Michigan State's Spring Showcase event on Saturday, and for good reason. The hype surrounding the sophomore signal-caller, a former four-star recruit who follows new Spartans coach Jonathan Smith from Corvallis, has East Lansing buzzing with anticipation.
For the most part, Chiles was in that role Saturday at Spartan Stadium, but so is another transfer quarterback who has gotten less and less attention since committing to releasing Smith and his staff through the portal. He finally got the attention he deserved.
Tommy Schuster, a fourth-year starter at FCS-level North Dakota, threw for 135 yards and one touchdown while completing 6-of-8 pass attempts in the MSU scrimmage, when the Spartans He showed why the NFL's coaching staff rates him so highly.
“Tommy, he's always been like this,” Smith said after the spring game. “He's a complete passman. He plays with poise and decisiveness and recognizes coverage very well.”
Schuster scored on the biggest play of scrimmage, a 75-yard bomb, connecting with true freshman wide receiver Nick Marsh. Smith noted that the North Dakota transfer dug into the pocket under heavy pressure to get the ball down the field, but Schuster didn't have to take a big hit because the defense avoided the quarterback. .
“He gave Nick a deep ball in the middle of the field,” Smith said. “I think in live football, he does a pretty good job of that.” [throw], from my vantage point behind him, he was solid throughout camp. He understands the concept and can handle it accurately, and he plays with great poise and competitiveness. ”
No matter how you look at it, Chiles is expected to be Michigan State's starting quarterback this fall, but it's still interesting to see the sophomore watch and try to learn from the veteran Schuster. I haven't stopped it.
“Tommy is a baseball player, and I like what he's doing,” Chiles said. “When he goes into the game, I watch what he does because he is much more experienced.
“I learned from other coaches. The defensive coach told me that you live by the gun and die by the gun. I'm a really aggressive quarterback and I'm like, take things that you probably shouldn't take. Tommy goes out there and takes what the defense gives him, and I like his job, he just calmly, calmly, calmly takes the ball down the field, and I I really like the fact that he's always leading this team. For him, I like Tommy, he's usually a quiet guy, but he's really cool.”
