MITCHELL — The Mitchell High School football team now knows when and where it will play in 2024 and 2025 after the South Dakota High School Activities Association released the updated high school football schedule for the next two seasons.
Among the notable changes in 2024 include three of the first four home games for the Colonels, who went 2-7 last season and missed the Class 11AA playoffs. MHS, which opened the season with back-to-back road games in 2023, will play its first two games at home in 2024.
Mitchell opens the season against Douglas at Joe Quintal Field on the weekend of August 30th — the first time against the Patriots since 2020 — then faces Huron at Mitchell on the weekend of September 6th. do. This will be the fourth time since 2006 that the Mitchell-Huron game will not be held in the traditional September slot, and the first time the Colonels-Tigers rivalry has met since September 7, 2007.
The Colonels will be on the road for the first time in 2024, playing at Spearfish on September 13th, followed by a home matchup against Brookings on September 20th. The Colonels will return on the road for their second Tee Area game in 2024. A look back at the program's history was held on September 27th, followed by a road trip to Aberdeen on October 4th.
The final homestand of the regular season begins Oct. 11 with Mitchell playing Class 11AAA foe Brandon Valley at Joe Quintal Field. The Lynx and Brandon Valley have only faced off once in the past 12 seasons. Mitchell played against Sioux Falls-Jefferson as a Class 11AAA crossover opponent in each of the past two seasons.
The Colonels will host Watertown on Oct. 18 before playing their final regular season game in Yankton on Thursday, Oct. 24, when MHS and the Bucs will meet for the first time since 2008 to end the regular season.
Notably, Mitchell will not play with Pierre during the regular season for the first time in several years and will miss the matchup against the reigning seven-time Class 11AA state champion and Eastern South Dakota Conference rival. Including playoff contests, the Colonels and Governors have met 14 times over the past 10 seasons. In Class 11AA, the Scoopers and Colonels have played nine times in the same season, including playoff games, so the Colonels will not play Sturgis either.
The specific dates for Mitchell's games are subject to change, as some games have been moved to Thursday or Saturday due to officiating. Mitchell traditionally plays the Colonel Bowl game at home on the first Saturday of the season, but a date for that game has not yet been determined.
In this schedule cycle, each team in the 11-school Class 11AA plays one game against a Class 11AAA team, and the remaining eight games are played against 11AA opponents.
Mitchell's 2025 schedule will be flipped from the 2024 home and road alignment, with the Colonels playing three of their first four games on the road in 2025 and three of their final five. It will finish and end at Joe Quintal Field.
