As Oklahoma's annual spring game approaches Saturday, players appear to be taking advantage of the latest opening in the NCAA transfer portal.
Sooners fifth-year senior linebacker Shane Whiteter announced Tuesday night that he is entering the portal “with gratitude.”
“First and foremost, I want to thank God for getting me to where I am today,” Witter wrote in a post on Twitter/X. “I want to thank Sooner Nation for creating an unforgettable chapter at Oklahoma! The outstanding coaches, teammates, and staff here that helped me grow as a person and an athlete. I am honored to have been able to call myself a Sooner for four years and am grateful for every step of my journey at OU.
“With gratitude, I am entering the transfer portal for my final two years of eligibility. While I am excited about the journey ahead, Oklahoma will always hold a special place in my heart.” I guess.”
Witter is the second Sooner to enter the portal on Tuesday, the first day of the spring portal period. Earlier in the day, Walk-on tight end Hayden Bray hits the portal..
Witter is a four-star prospect out of Burlington, North Carolina, who came to OU in January 2020 as the nation's No. 11 inside linebacker, according to 247Sports.
He played primarily on special teams throughout his career, appearing in nine games in 2020, 13 games in 2021, four games in 2022 before his knee injury, and 13 games in 2023.
The 6-foot, 220-pound Witter has totaled 48 tackles in his career, including a career-high 27 tackles in 2021. He played in 39 total games and finished with 3.5 tackles for loss and fumble recovery.
Witter chose the Sooners over North Carolina, Navy and Wake Forest.
The NCAA Transfer Portal will be open after the conference championship game and for 15 days in the spring. Also available for certain programs that experience a head coaching change.
