On Sunday, the Buckeyes acquired a commitment from former Oregon point guard Chance Gray, making them their first portal pickup in 2024.
Gray ranked second on the Ducks last season with 13.9 points per game and dished out a team-high three assists per game. In her second season, she shot 33.7 percent from behind the 3-point line but only 34.7 percent from the field.

Gray, who attracted attention as an in-state recruit, spent his first three years of prep at Lakota West High School in Beckett Ridge, Ohio, before transferring to Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati. Gray was a five-star recruit and the No. 7 overall prospect in the class of 2022, according to ESPN.
The Buckeyes were not among the finalists in the initial Pac-12-focused recruitment because she chose Oregon State over UCLA. Gray earned All-Ohio honors three times in high school and averaged an impressive 26.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 3.2 steals per game as a senior at Winton Woods.
Gray was immediately available as a freshman at Oregon in the 2022-23 season, starting all 35 games for the Ducks that year, averaging 10.3 points and 2.2 assists per game.
Five guards are missing from this year's Ohio State roster. Longtime star Jaycee Sheldon is ineligible, as is Duke transfer and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Celeste Taylor. Emma Shumate, Diana Collins and Ricky Harris have all entered the transfer portal.
Madison Green will complement Gray in the backcourt, entering his sixth year at Ohio State and finally looking healthy after suffering back-to-back season-ending injuries in 2021-22 and 2022-23. It connects the years. Kaia Henderson and Kennedy Cambridge will join her to round out the Buckeyes' expected returning players in her backcourt.
Incoming five-star recruit Jaloni Cambridge and four-star prospect Ava Watson will join the team this summer to strengthen the backcourt roster. The Buckeyes still have two scholarship spots remaining for the 2024-25 season, so McGough could consider moving further to the backcourt, but Eboni Walker will have another year of eligibility. Otherwise, that number could rise to three.
