The Duxbury High School football team begins its defense of the Division 4 state championship in a historic matchup in the fall.
The Dragons will host Abington on Friday, September 6th, marking the Green Wave's first game since the Jim Kelliher era. Kelliher retired in November after running the show for 50 seasons.
Ed Riley, a longtime Abington assistant, was promoted to head coach in December. His debut will be Abington's first game since 1973 without Kelliher wandering the sideline.
Top-seeded Duxbury clinches 2023 state honors with senior running back Alex Barlow rushing for 275 yards and five touchdowns in a 62-33 win over Scituate in the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium. I got it.
This was the Dragons' fourth consecutive appearance in the finals and their second consecutive title. They defeated Grafton 42-7 in the 2022 Super Bowl.
Abington finished 8-3 last season, defeating Whitman-Hanson 46-6 in Kelliher's farewell game on Thanksgiving. The second-seeded Green Wave were upset by No. 15 Stoneham in the first round of last year's division. 6 playoffs.
This year, due to the quirks of the calendar, Labor Day is early (Sept. 2) and Thanksgiving is late (Nov. 28), giving MIAA football teams an extra week to schedule games. The additional week is called Week 1A. Schools can schedule up to eight games over a nine-week period from Labor Day to the deadline, Sunday, Nov. 3.
