The Eagles have lost in the state title game in two of the past three seasons.
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) –The Fargo Davis girls soccer team has fallen just short of its goal two of the past three years. In 2021, they lost to Minot in the state title game and lost to the same opponent again a season ago in 2023.
The Eagles are preparing for a revenge tour after losing to Minot in the state title game in two of the past three years. Already with a 1-0 record on the season, Davis has every motivation to reach the state title game again this year and earn its first win since back-to-back championships in 2017 and 2018.
“When a lot of experienced people come back, [losing in the title game last] Playing in the spring, especially on our home field, is the next evolution for us as a team,” head coach Nick Christianson said. “They're trying to find the next little part. What can they do a little bit better?” What could they change? They are excited about this year's challenge. ”
Senior midfielder Madison Vernick is determined to help the team return to glory this season.
“Obviously, now that we have achieved that, [to the title game] “Even though we didn’t win, we want to change that,” said Vernick, who was named to the All-State Tournament team for his performance in the 2023 tournament. “We all stay pretty focused and put in a lot of effort during practice. It just feels like we gave it our all.”
Davis returns the majority of the roster, including midfielder Madison Vernick and several others who were members of the All-State Tournament team. The team believes the overall experience of their return can lift them to the top.
“I think we’re all very eager to get into this year,” senior goalie Kaia Davidson said. “We all want another chance to win a state title.”
Coach Christianson added:
“We have a great core group of girls around us.” [returning]'' said Christianson. “[And] Added some new stuff [players as well]. We're just excited about this group. ”
Fargo Davis (1-0) will face Fargo North on Thursday, April 11th.
The state tournament is currently scheduled for May 30th to June 1st at Duane Carlson Stadium in Minot, North Dakota.
